What is a kirtan?

What is a kirtan?

Kirtan has been defined in various ways. It means "laudatory recital". You could think of a Kirtan as the opportunity to exchange ancient vibrations, and tune into your highest self. aKirtan: SitSing is practiced from a non dogmatic, non religious  perspective. Sanskrit Chants are used as a medium of powerful in-livening vibration they were created to be. This is a pure being experiential evening, allowing your experience freedom.

In the classical Yoga system, Pratyahara is the methods used to draw the mind inwards. Kirtan is Pratyahara, the 5th limb of the 8 limb yoga practice. In Kirtan we utilize ancient language sanskirt, specifically mantra's.  Mantra, literally means to be out of the mind. Kirtan can be a bridge between our outer and inner selves and an expression of our desire to know and love from a steady state within.

Traditionally, Kirtan is done in a call and response style. There is a subtle dialogue, or as the word itself suggests, communication between the caller and the response. How the songs unfold depends on the group's wholehearted response.

The power is inherent in the sound. If someone is totally present in the chant, the energy and power will be experienced and can awaken them into the Stillness within. Once experience this inner fire will not be quelled.

Join JAYA! for an experiential evening of vocal toning, sanskrit chanting, in a call and response circle —a unique blend of primordial traditions to in-liven and experience the essence of the soul.
